Comparative Essay- to Kill a Mockingbird and the Lamp at Noon free essay sample
They argue about staying or moving from the farm because of a dust storm. Both works are related with important events in U. S.? s history. ââ¬Å"To Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠describes the U. S.? s society after Civil War and ââ¬Å"The Lamp at Noonâ⬠takes place during the Great Depression. There are many similarities and differences between these two works in terms of themes connected to gender discrimination, empathy and sacrifice. (AN+TS) ? To begin, in ââ¬Å"To Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Lamp at Noonâ⬠one common theme is gender discrimination. For example, Scout thinks that being called a girl is the worst thing possible. She hangs out with boys and fights which signifies that she is a tomboy. Aunt Alexandra does not like that and tries to make a lady from her. Scout narrates, ââ¬Å"Aunt Alexandra? s vision of my deportment involved playing with small stoves, tea sets, and wearing the Add-A-Pearl necklace she gave me when I was born; [â⬠¦]. We will write a custom essay sample on Comparative Essay- to Kill a Mockingbird and the Lamp at Noon or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page â⬠(108). Next, the discrimination against women was seen also during Reverend Sykes? s sermon. He talks about women? s impurity and warns his people against them. He says, ââ¬Å"Bootledggers caused enough Navracic, Suzuki 2 trouble in the Quarters, but women are worse. To an audience in church]. â⬠(162) Furthermore, the gender discrimination against men is significant in that novel, too. To demonstrate, Francis is proud that grandma is going to teach him how to cook, however Scout is condescending him and all men at the same time. ââ¬Å"Boys don? t cook. â⬠(109) Similarly, in ââ¬Å"The Lamp at Noonâ⬠Paul discriminates Ellen when she wants to move to the town where her father lives. Paul says, ââ¬Å"You are farmer? s wife now. [To Ellen]. â⬠(66) He shows that her place is on the farm with him because she chose to be his wife. Her bligation is to be good, obedient wife who will be with him in good times as well as in bad times as she once promised. He is head of the family and her role is to take care of house and their baby. In both works women are condescended by men. Differently, in ââ¬Å"To Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠one can discover reversible gender discrimination while in ââ¬Å"The Lamp at Noonâ⬠is only discrimination against women. (AN) ? Furthermore, other common theme of these two works is empathy, also known as walking in someone else? s shoes. For example, Atticus is empathic person. Before he makes some conclusion or opinion on somebody, he watches on specific problem from their point of view. On that principle he raises up his children. When Scout goes to school the first day she comes home frustrated that she does not want to go to school again because of Miss Caroline. Atticus immediately empathizes with Miss Caroline and explains Scout her situation. He says, ââ¬Å"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view? [To Scout]. ââ¬Å" (39) On the other hand, Paul and Ellen are unable to empathize with each other because of the dust storm. Paul over plows the land, destroying the roots which leads to desertification. They lose their baby, their relationship is in crisis, and all this happens because Paul is ignorant and does not listen to his wife who warned him and pleaded him for empathy. She says to Paul, ââ¬Å"Think of me and him. It? s not fair. We have our lives, too, to Navracic, Suzuki 3 live. [â⬠¦]. â⬠(66) At the beginning they argue but at the end compromise comes, she promises to stay and he will grow fibrous crops. Finally, empathy and compromise are necessary in relationships, society and everyday living. (AN) ? ?

Another Evening At The Club Essay Essay Example
Another Evening At The Club Essay Essay Example Another Evening At The Club Essay Paper Another Evening At The Club Essay Paper Essay Topic: The Joy Luck Club Alifa Rifaatââ¬â¢s story ââ¬Å"Another evening at the clubâ⬠gives a reflection of a womanââ¬â¢s perspective on life and marriage in a patriarchal society. It brings to light the unconventional reasons for a womanââ¬â¢s acceptance of marriage in a society such as material gain and power. Rifaatââ¬â¢s story is the protagonist Samiaââ¬â¢s journey to realizing the true meaning of her place and authority in her marriage. Through various flashbacks the author attempts to bring a cohesive end to the protagonists realizations at the end of the story. The final passage of the story is the defining point of realization of her role in establishing the status quo of her marriage. The story reinforces the theme of materialism and societal influences on a person and their desires. Social norms and values play a significant role in shaping Samiaââ¬â¢s perception of life and love. The final passage is the moment when Samia realizes that the idea of marriage that she had been taught to believe in was just an empty negotiated contract. In that moment she understands that the secondary position that she had accepted and the riches she had received was a form of payment. A price she paid for compromising a husbandââ¬â¢s love and marrying an older man. Samiaââ¬â¢s journey of realization to that moment begins when the terms of her marriage to Abboud Bey is negotiated. The author also shows how Samiaââ¬â¢s mother and the patriarchal society have shaped her expectations and desires for materialistic pleasures. Her motherââ¬â¢s words in turn solidify her view that marriage should provide her with money, power and status: Youââ¬â¢re a lucky girl he is a real find. Any girl would be happy to have him. Heââ¬â¢s an inspector of irrigation though he is not yet forty. He earns a big salary and gets fully furnished government house wherever heââ¬â¢s posted, which will save us the expense of setting up a house ââ¬â and I donââ¬â¢t have to tell you what our situation is and thatââ¬â¢s beside the house he owns in Alexandria where youââ¬â¢ll be spending youââ¬â¢re holidays. (Rifaat 310) The basis of Samia decision may not only have been her familyââ¬â¢s financial state but also the allure of being a member of higher society. Rafat exposes this human but materialistic side of Samiaââ¬â¢s personality when she says, ââ¬Å"in particular she noticed the well cut coat of English tweed and the silk shirt and the gold cuff linksâ⬠(Rifaat 309). The emerald ring, the diamond bracelet, the lifestyle all symbolize the illusion of necessities that Samia now has. The author adds to this side of her personality when she contrasts how Samia felt when she saw Abboud Beyââ¬â¢s authority and feels ââ¬Å"a guilty shame at her fatherââ¬â¢s inadequacyâ⬠(Rifaat 309). Samia associates money with power and poverty with inadequacy. The house and the money were all compensations she received for compromising who she was. Her husband asks her to tell people that her ââ¬Å"father was a judgeâ⬠(Rifaat 310), indicating a life started with a lie and based on image. Samiaââ¬â¢s decision to marry him is only human, she wanted something that didnââ¬â¢t understand but needed. Her marriage to Abboud Bey was not only a chance for him to enhance his image in society but for her to become a member of high society. The physical gestures displayed by Abboud Bey impacts the way Samia see her position in her marriage. Abboud Beyââ¬â¢s simple gesture of ââ¬Å"gently patting her cheeks in a fatherly reassuring gestureâ⬠(Rifaat 312), which initially made Samia feel safe completely changed meaning in the final passage of the story. This gesture triggers Samiaââ¬â¢s realization that her husband slapping the maid or patting her cheeks were synonymous in displaying his authority and power over them. Samia reveals her realization of this authority: The gesture told her more eloquently than any words that he was the man and she was the woman, he the one who carried the responsibilities, made the decision, she was the whose role it was to be beautiful, happy, carefree. Now, though, for the first time in their life together the gesture came like a slap in the face. (Rifaat 312) Samia calls the gesture a slap in the face not because it was used to silence her but as a wake up call. It was like the slap had destroyed the illusion, which she has been living, and woken her up to a cruel reality. When he removes his hand the realization of her husbandââ¬â¢s true authority over her rattles every fiber of being as ââ¬Å"her whole body was seized with an uncontrollable tremblingâ⬠(Rifaat 312). Samia understood that his every gesture had slowly taken over her autonomy was with her permission. When she tells Abboud Bey, ââ¬Å"I thought Iââ¬â¢d better leave it to youâ⬠(Rifaat 311) she was giving him more authority, as he was the man and she the woman. When she could have confronted the maid herself she hands it over to her husband and ââ¬Å"took herself to the corner of the roomâ⬠(Rifaat 311) avoiding any responsibility. This was a position that Samia had been taught to accept being brought up in a patriarchal society where the man has the authority. Upon finding the ring ââ¬Å"she felt tempted toâ⬠¦throw it into the river so as to be rid of the unpleasantness that lay aheadâ⬠(Rifaat 312). Samia had enjoyed the benefits but could not endure the consequences of her decisions. Power had bought her swift action but also brought her guilt. The ââ¬Ëslapââ¬â¢ begins the series of thoughts that act as her prequel to her ultimate realization in the final passage. The setting of the final moment supports the development of Samiaââ¬â¢s thoughts to that realization point. The window, the boat and the lilies all exemplify and support Samiaââ¬â¢s feelings. When she leans against the large window and ââ¬Å"close [s] her eyes tightlyâ⬠(Rifaat 313) she remembers that is what she had wanted all along. The large comforting window acts like a barrier to her thoughts and leads her to the point where she remembers her compromise. The image of ââ¬Å"the dark shape of the boat had momentarily blocked out the cafà © sceneâ⬠(Rifaat 313), as she had momentarily forgotten her place and now it was visible to her. It was not a realization; Samia had just forgotten for a moment that this is the reality of her life. The power and allure of society had blocked out her sense and logic, which a simple gesture had now let lose. As the boat cut through the ââ¬Å"Nile water lilies that, rootless, are swept along the currentâ⬠(Rifaat 313) every misconception that she had slowly swept away. When Samia opens her eyes she sees just another evening at the club with the ââ¬Å"the cafà © lights strung between the trees on the opposite shore â⬠¦ and the men seated under [the trees] and a waiter moving among the tablesâ⬠(Rifaat 313). When she looks at the people playing chess and eating at the club through the comforting warmth of her window she sees her every desire. The waiters moving in between them shows the contrast in power and the life she may have had. When she opens her eyes it was like a curtain had been raised and the show was over and it was time to go back to the real world. This memory had brought with it a realization and its own questions. The decision lies in Samiaââ¬â¢s hands to chose the life she lived from that moment onwards. Comfort, luxury and status were all waiting outside that window for her decision. Samiaââ¬â¢s smile at the end symbolized her surrender to power and status. She was smiling as she had understood and made peace with her reality. Now it was time for her to go out to the club and join the society she wanted to part of. It was a smile of a mother and wife but most of all of a woman who knew what she wanted and how much she had given up for it. In conclusion the story explores the materialistic but humane characteristics of a woman in a patriarchal society. Through Samiaââ¬â¢s point of view the author illustrates the influences of societal expectations and mans authority over women. The image of Samia leaning against the window and closing her eyes compels one to understand the true meaning of her compromise. It is difficult to understand a womanââ¬â¢s desires especially when she realizes that they arenââ¬â¢t completely hers.

The difference between coaching and psychotherapy Essay
The difference between coaching and psychotherapy - Essay Example In coaching, the practitioner helps its clients to access those information, skills and wisdom that they already have to make decisions, about which changes they would like to make; to develop a personal "action plan" in order to make those changes, to implement the action plan, and lastly to develop strategies to maintain the changes they make. The client will have to set the agenda for coaching. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, is a health care service focusing on identifying and treating diagnosable psychological disorders. The goals of psychotherapy include awakening hope, re-accessing mental well-being and encouraging changes that support mental well-being. Coaching uses variety of techniques and practices to help clients quickly produce desired results even more than they would do on their own. Psychotherapy also has techniques to help their clients but it is a slow process. The focus of coaching is on results as opposed to symptoms or psychology, yet clearly coaching is about relating to and impacting people. Therapy, while it should and will often create results, focuses on healing psychological or situational pain or distress. Typical reasons people seek coaching are: to clarify goals, to start something new, to create and execute one's vision, when life is out of balance when one cannot enjoy their success and when one is in transition. These are not "medically necessary" reasons but all potentially will be life enhancing. Traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy is past-based, working on feelings and events that have already occurred. Coaching may also focus specifically on areas which therapy would not, such as balance, strategic planning or life planning. These might be the product of a successful psychotherapy but not the focus. Coaching is collaboration between coach and client. Therapy is an expert relationship in which the therapist has greater power. Increasingly therapy is a three-way relationship in which an insurance company knows the client's issues and has a say. Coaching is future-oriented and designed to move the client towards an outcome. It can also be process oriented. Psychotherapy is process oriented. Coaches cannot take up the tasks of therapy. There is a need of lot of technical work. Therapists can and frequently do "coach" their clients - particularly in long-term relationships after the major psychological work has been done. Therapists, in fact, can be the best coaches because of their training in listening skills A coach will sometimes guide individuals toward increased awareness of how their thoughts and emotional reactions lead to problematic behaviors in the workplace. Therapy may share coaching's goals of improved personal effectiveness and increased awareness of problematic thoughts and emotional reactions that may impede work effectiveness. But therapy also addresses non-work aspects of an individual's life and may involve in-depth explorations of the client's history, and their key relationships with parents and other family members - issues that may be only tangentially related to business effectiveness. The coach training offerings vary from a few days to a full year. In order to take on the deeper self exploration common to the therapeutic situation counselors and therapists require an extensive training typically far in excess of coach training. Balance between wireless security and performance Thesis Proposal
Balance between wireless security and performance - Thesis Proposal Example This physical connection is easily detected and can be traced to the eavesdropper. This as a result has made the wireless security be under scrutiny since it fails to offer the appropriate security. The security risks that accompany the wireless environment are quite exposing. The amount of security that should be incorporated in the system normally depends on the size and the nature of information being handled by the organization as well as on the devices being used (Dawoud 56). The first and foremost way is to maintain a full understanding of that particular networks topology. This understanding is important as it creates an improvement to the system design whenever the need arise. These improvements are important in optimization of the performance of that system. This is important especially where there is periodic assessment of the security controls and their performance (Hirani 39). This research shall seek to come up with a way of securing the wireless network and enhance the security levels to satisfaction. The research shall propose devices that shall also aid the mobility for the wireless devices. Many scholars have come up with writings assessing the performance of wireless devices. They have come up with ways of maintaining the wireless networks as well as how to create the same. Maintaining a secure network should be a continuous activity that keeps going on. It should be assessed regularly in terms of performance and if there is need to upgrade or improve the technology that is being used (William 78). Keeping inventories of the equipments that are used in that wireless network is also a good way of ensuring performance. In addition, having back up for the transactions and the communications is also important to secure the system (Erica et al. 44). There should be a wide usage of inherent security features. An example of these
